Landfill gas engines: 67 % fewer oil changes

Landfill gas wears out the oil quickly, and silicon is the figure that decides the oil change. In a one-year field test on several gas engines, the manufacturer reported 63 % less silicon in the oil and 67.4 % fewer oil changes.

Gas engines running on landfill gas work under harder conditions than most: the gas carries silicon and other abrasive substances into the engine oil, and the silicon level is typically the figure that decides when the oil must be changed. The result is frequent oil changes and downtime.

The manufacturer of Delta Xero ran a one-year field test at several landfill sites with Jenbacher 320 and CAT 3516 engines, where the engine oil was cleaned continuously with Powertrain cartridge units and the oil samples were followed by an external laboratory.

The manufacturer’s figures from the test: 63 % less silicon and abrasive particles in the oil, 67.4 % fewer oil changes and 46 % lower annual costs for oil and service.

The figures are the manufacturer’s own from the field test, and no raw data for individual engines has been published. We use them because the mechanism is the same as the documented cases show with full laboratory figures: when the particles are removed continuously, the oil lasts longer. Run a pilot yourself if you want the figures confirmed on your own plant.
